Women in Rowing

Sep 02, 2024

CIRC is wholeheartedly involved with Rowing Ireland's 'Women in Rowing' initiative, which aims to introduce more women to the sport. Spearheaded by Fiona Kelly, the club is currently running a 6-week introduction to rowing. Due to her efforts, we have seen the largest uptake in the country for this initiative, with 17 ladies signing up for CIRC's introductory course. And they are in good hands - Fiona coaches CIRC's senior women squad and she is ably assisted by some of the club's top coaches (including our chairman, Noel Hume, and senior boys coach, Fiona Lawless) as well as dozens of volunteer club members.

So far, we are 2 weeks into this introduction course. The initial session was land-based (a decision all attendees welcomed, due to the miserable weather); however the second session took place in glorious autumn sunshine, with no hint of a breeze - ideal conditions to allow everyone who signed up for the course to experience their first on-the-water session. Training took place in 2 octs and 3 touring quads, each one manned by a CIRC cox , 1 or 2 experienced CIRC rowers, and course attendees. Each boat was also accompanied by a coach in a safety launch.
