We would like to thank Leo Wall for his interest in this archive and for providing much of the information regarding the photos of the late 1950's and early 1960's crews. Leo's detailed knowledge of the events and the names of various crews is remarkable.

The next two photos were taken at the wooden slip (no longer there) of the National University of Ireland Galway Boat Club (NUIG BC).

The above photo was taken from the old Jes slip. Notice the Salmon Weir and Woodquay in the background and the barrier between CRYC and CIRC to the right of the picture. This was before the pontoon barrier was built in front of the Salmon Weir. The pontoon has made the area far less dangerous.

The 1960: The Jes Senior 8. From left, Dermot Stewart (Bow), Des Doherty 2,  Ronnie McDonald 3, Dave Taylor 4, Michael O' Dwyer 5, Denis  Reidy 6,  Nicky Hardiman 7, Leo Wall (Stk). In front, Robert Molloy (cox).

In 1960 the Jes also won the clinker section of the Dublin Head of the River with a different crew: Dermot Stuart (bow), Des Doherty, Ronald McDonald, Dave Taylor, Michael O'Dwyer, Denis Reidy, Nicky Hardiman, Leo Wall (stk.) and Robert Molloy (cox).

The 1960 crew, with many of the same rowers as the 1959 crew, was recognised as perhaps the fastest the school ever produced. They were unbeaten in Ireland that year, but did not compete in the Championship because they went on tour to Germany, where they also were unbeaten.

We could not resist including the following photo.

A photo taken in 1950 of future Jes Rowers. From left, Brendan Healy, Christy Tierney and Leo Wall.

Brendan Healy, now a retired orthopaedic surgeon in Sligo, stroked the Jes second eight in 1960. He finished school in 1960. Brendan is currently archiving a history of past students for the school. Christy Tierney, now a retired teacher in Canada, was the stroke and captain of the Jes championship winning eight in 1958. He finished his Jes schooling in 1958. Leo Wall, still a fully active optometrist in Galway, was the stroke of the famous Jes European crew of 1960, arguably the fastest crew produced by the college. Leo finished school in 1960.  (Paragraph drafted in October 2012).
